When should parents consult a child psychologist?

Reaching out for professional support is not a last resort. It is a smart, early step that helps your child and you.
Many parents wait too long because they fear a label, or hope behavior will pass. A child psychologist is not only for crisis โ they help with everyday struggles too.
Signs it's worth booking a session
Behavior that has changed suddenly, frequent meltdowns past age 6, school refusal, sleep regression, persistent sadness or worry, friendship struggles that last weeks, or talk of self-harm (always urgent).
What a first session usually looks like
Often the parents go alone first. The psychologist listens, asks about history, and suggests a plan. Your child may never even be diagnosed โ sometimes just adjusting the home environment is enough.
You are not 'overreacting'
Booking one session is like booking a dental check-up. If everything is fine, you leave reassured. If something needs support, you caught it early. Both are wins.
