When big feelings hit, words don't work. The body needs to settle first. Here are five tiny tools that actually help.
A child in meltdown can't 'use their words' โ the part of the brain that talks has gone offline. Your job is to help the body calm first. Then the words come back.
1. Bubble breathing
Pretend to blow a giant bubble: slow in through the nose, slow out through the mouth. Do it together 5 times. Long exhales tell the nervous system 'we are safe'.
2. Cold water on wrists
Run cool water over the inside of the wrists for 30 seconds. It triggers a quick physiological calm response. Works for adults too.
3. The 5-4-3-2-1 game
Name 5 things you see, 4 you hear, 3 you can touch, 2 you can smell, 1 you can taste. Brings the brain out of the storm and back into the room.
4. Push the wall
Press both hands hard against a wall for 10 seconds, then release. Repeat 3 times. Heavy work calms the body fast.
5. The hug-and-hum
Sit, hold them gently, and hum a low steady sound. The vibration soothes their nervous system through yours. No words needed.
